High school in the 70s, 80s, and 90s – compared to now

A lot has changed since 1970. Fashion, music, and culture have transformed over fifty years, but that transition took time, something that this video shows us using snapshots from 50 years of graduating high school students.

The fashion and hairstyles of 1970 look incredibly different from those we have today. But as the years progress, the transition to the styles of 2020 seems less severe by comparison.

As each year goes by, the style of the high school students changes a little more. The shifts are subtle when played one year at a time, allowing the viewer to see the transitions as they occurred.

While this video highlights differences, it also shows similarities. For many people, high school is a challenging and turbulent time. As teenagers, high schoolers are just beginning to taste freedom and responsibilities while being denied many facets that make adulthood enjoyable.

While fashion styles and music have changed across the years, this conflict between the freedoms teenagers have and the ones they cannot access can be felt throughout each graduating year.

While some of the teenagers were more playful or flamboyant when they realized they were on camera, each of the students exuded the feeling of exploration and uncertainty that comes with that time of life, which is why their senses of style were so indicative of their times.

But even for those of us who would never want to go back to those hormone-fueled years, looking at each of these years brings back an undeniable sense of nostalgia. Take a look back at your graduating years.
