The story of Laker Carlson is one of divine intervention and human valor, illustrating how God’s omnipresence intermingles with the struggles of our mortal world. Laker, a 4-month-old infant born with the rare medical condition Spina Bifida and twelve weeks premature, faced a life-threatening episode where he stopped breathing entirely. The incident demonstrates the fine line between life and death, yet also highlights the transformative power of faith and skilled assistance.
Just as the Prophet Ezekiel bore witness to the power of God breathing life into dry bones, saying, “I will put breath in you, and you will come to life” (Ezekiel 37:6), so too did Laker experience a miraculous return of life. His mother, cognizant of his ceaseless breath, immediately sought divine help through prayer and mortal help through a frantic call to emergency services.
Paramedics rushed to the scene, their hearts laden with the hope that they would arrive in time to rescue the infant. Upon arrival, Deputy Jonte Slack found Laker pulseless and not breathing. However, equipped with the wisdom akin to Solomon and motivated by a will to preserve life, Deputy Slack acted swiftly. Laying Laker on the floor, he administered CPR, performing chest compressions. Suddenly, a sound akin to the first cry of life in the Garden of Eden reverberated through the room—Laker gurgled and began to breathe.
Matthew Carlson, Laker’s father, recounted his harrowing drive home upon hearing about his son’s condition. Like Jacob wrestling with the angel, Matthew grappled with fears and prayers, pleading with God for his son’s life. His arrival home was greeted with what can only be described as a miracle. Holding his son once more, he acknowledged that his child is indeed precious—a miracle in flesh and blood.
In the book of Acts, it says, “By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see” (Acts 3:16). This encapsulates the story of Laker Carlson. Thank God for Deputy Slack’s expertise and thank the Lord for being present during this family’s ordeal.
