One Japanese diver has developed a strong and beautiful relationship with a surprising friend–a friendly Asian sheepshead wrasse named Yoriko. The pair meet in a remarkable underground shrine under the surface of Japan’s Tateyama Bay.
Hiroyuki Arakawa has been diving at the spot for over 25 years and has been entrusted with the task of guiding other divers who wish to visit the shrine. In that time he’s become acquainted with the local marine life. He shares a special bond with Yoriko, however. The two have forged a relationship based on trust and respect.
One testament to their kinship is Yoriko’s custom of greeting Hiroyuki with a kiss whenever they meet. Many people think fish are not very loving creatures, but recent studies show this is just a misconception.
