The 1950s was a decade of unforgettable moments and happenings across the country. It was a time when the post-WWII Baby Boom took place. Although the Baby Boom started in 1946, the decade of 1950 set the record for the most number of babies born in a year. Each year in the 1950s, around 4 million babies were born. This number peaked in 1957 with 4.3 million babies born.
James and Mary were the most famous names during this period. On the other hand, the median home price in the decade of 1950 was $7,354. You could buy a house of around 1,000 sq. ft. at that price. So the houses were smaller, and families had fewer things to clutter their rooms.
Peanuts, one of the most popular comic strips worldwide, started on October 2nd, 1950. However, Charlie Brown and other characters looked different at that time because they appeared more like toddlers. However, it was in 1957 that Peanuts became one of the most influential and famous comic strips. 17,000 strips were published of the comic.
Several other amazing things took place during the decade of 1950. For instance, Diners Club was the first credit card that started during that era. It was initiated to pay for dinner at various restaurants in and around New York City. During this decade, an attack on President Truman by two militants at the Blair House was also foiled. The militants acted in the name of Puerto Rican Independence.
I Love Lucy, a popular television show, debuted on October 15th, 1951. More than half of all television households watched the show’s first season. The first season also ended at Number 3 in the Nielsen Ratings. During this decade, the 25th Annual Academy Awards was broadcast for the first time on TV. This took place on March 19th, 1953.
In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick discovered the double helix that solved the puzzle of how genetic instructions were passed down through generations. Another exciting event during this decade was including the word “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. This took place in 1954, and President Eisenhower and Congress included the word.
During this decade, James Dean, a famous actor, met with an accident after crashing his car on the highway into a 1954 Tutor. Soon after his death, Dean became a phenomenon and the first non-living actor nominated for an Academy Award. In addition, two titans of modern technology were born in 1955. Steve Jobs was born on February 24th, 1955, and Bill Gates was born on October 28th, 1955.
