In a world where pressures and stresses are at an all-time high, the University of Oklahoma softball players are setting an example by attributing their stability and success to their faith in Jesus Christ. Amidst the fierce competition of NCAA level sports, three members of the team recently expressed their perspective on dealing with pressure during an ESPN interview, that was later posted on YouTube.
The conversation began with ESPN reporter asking Grace Lyons how she manages to maintain joy throughout the softball season. Grace responded by acknowledging Jesus Christ as the only true source of joy that does not fade away. She explained, “Well, the only way that you can have a joy that doesn’t fade away is from the Lord. And any other type of joy is actually happiness that comes from circumstances and outcomes.” This response beautifully encapsulates the teachings of Romans 15:13, “Now may the God of hope make you full of joy and peace through faith, so that all hope may be yours in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Jayda Coleman, another team member, echoed Grace’s sentiments by adding that their ability to stay relaxed on the field stems from the fact that winning or losing a game does not define them. She elaborated, “Yes, obviously, we worked our butts off to be here and we want to win. But it’s not the end of the world because our life is in Christ and that’s all that matters.”
Moreover, Alyssa Brito highlighted the transient nature of earthly achievements by stating, “No matter the outcome, whether we get a trophy in the end or not, this isn’t our home. And I think that’s what’s amazing about it is, we have so much more. We have an eternity of joy with our Father, and I’m so excited about that.”
Remarkably, two days after openly discussing their faith and personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the young women went on to win the Women’s College World Series.
The story of these athletes is a testament to the strength and serenity that comes from a deep-rooted faith in Jesus Christ. It serves as a reminder that while earthly achievements are gratifying, our ultimate home and source of joy is with our Heavenly Father. Let us be inspired by these young women to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Be encouraged to watch the video below.
