During his ten years on ‘The Carol Burnett Show,’ Harvey Korman won four Emmys and one Golden Globe. Though he appeared in other comedy shows and a few Mel Brooks’ movies, he’s best known for his work with Burnett.
The Carol Burnett show was known for the excellent working relationships that the comedic actors had. It was evident that the cast really enjoyed working together.
In this episode of The Carol Burnett Show, Burnett comes out to talk to the audience before the sketch begins. She is whispering and tells the audience it’s because she wants to let them in on a prank that Korman doesn’t know about.
She explains that they’ve rehearsed a sketch all week one way that ends with Korman bending over near the kitchen. Burnett is supposed to push the door open and hit him in the head to complete the sketch. However, she’s decided not to do it tonight just to see what Korman will do.
The audience is thrilled to be part of the joke. Carol Burnette and Vicki Lawrence begin the scene as Carol and her sister, Chris. Carol is crying because her husband, Roger, played by Korman, has decided to sell the house without her agreement.
The sisters hatch a plan to drive the potential buyers away so that they won’t have to sell. They tell lies about the construction, the type of neighborhood, the terrible television reception–anything to make the house seem unappealing.
Though Carol and her sister try their best, the other couple agrees to purchase the home. Roger is ecstatic until he learns that a freeway will run through his neighborhood, and he could’ve sold for five times the asking price. Angrily, he tells Carol to go into the kitchen. He soon lines his head up with where Carol told the audience he would, but she doesn’t come out. Korman continues to bend over and call her name until he falls on the floor, cracking up. The audience loves his reaction to the prank, and the actors enjoy themselves.
