In the midst of sorrow and loss, there is beauty and strength to be found in the memories of loved ones who have passed away. This was vividly illustrated by Jonah Manley, a 15-year-old boy who is blind, during a memorial service for his late mother, Nicole Davidson-Manley.
Jonah stood confidently at the microphone, expressing his love and admiration for his mother. His words were not only heartfelt and touching but also filled with wit, humor, and love. He shared several fond memories of his time with his mother, evoking laughter from the audience, and showcasing the depth of their bond.
As the Bible tells us in Proverbs 1:8-9, “My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching: for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.” These words remind us of the importance of the teachings and lessons imparted by our parents, and how they shape us into the individuals we become. Jonah’s tribute to his mother was a testament to the profound impact she had on his life.
Later in the service, Jonah’s father mentioned that one of Nicole’s favorite songs was the Josh Groban classic, “You Raise Me Up.” Jonah then took a seat at the piano and delivered a moving and beautiful performance of the song. The lyrics of the song clearly held a special place in his heart, and his strength to keep it together throughout the performance was inspiring.
The audience responded with a much-deserved round of applause at the conclusion of Jonah’s stirring performance, which honored his mother’s memory in a deeply meaningful way.
In a soundbite played at the end of the YouTube clip, Nicole, knowing that her time on this earth was limited, had requested that the song be played at her memorial service. This act of honoring her wish further showcased the deep love and respect Jonah had for his mother.
As Christians, we are called to honor our parents, and Jonah’s actions serve as a beautiful example of what it means to do so, even in the face of great loss. The strength, character, and talent exhibited by Jonah during this difficult time serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring love between a mother and her child.
