Police Corporal C.B. Fleming’s job is to protect and serve – and part of his job, he says, is making sure that the kids on his beat trust him.
When they’re in their uniforms and their eyes are hidden behind dark sunglasses, it can be easy to forget that cops are human, too. That’s why cops like Corporal C.B. Fleming of the South Hill, Virginia police force are so important.
One of the most important parts of his job, he says, is to ‘protect and serve’. This means being aware of the danger and saving lives, but it also means taking a little extra time to make sure the kids in the neighborhood are comfortable with him.
If they’re comfortable with him, if they don’t fear him, they are more likely to call him when something is wrong. It’s a move that could potentially save their lives.
So he takes the time to speak with them, learn about them, and even get down on the ground to play with them. He’s gone viral before for footage of him laying on the ground playing dolls with the little girls of this neighborhood.
The world needs more cops like C.B. Fleming, that’s for sure. We should also all try to be a little bit more like him. He’s definitely a superhero to these kids, and that might just keep them out of harm’s way one day.
