There are characters and then there are legendary characters that have forever forged their names in our minds and in history. Don Rickles, a long time friend of Frank Sinatra left no stone unturned when it came to roasting his friend.
For those who are new to the scene, a ‘Roast’ is somewhat the counter to a toast. This is when a person is subjected to good-natured ridicule and this is a way of honoring that ‘roasted’ individual. There are many roasts that have become famous today – from celebrities like Justin Beiber, Bob Saget, David Hasselhoff, and even Donald Trump.
Of course, the good-natured ridicule sometimes can take a harder turn in today’s roasts, but the basic premise still exists with the audience rolling in laughter at the subject’s ‘burn’. When the jokes come rolling out, there’s no way to hide, you just have to feel the burn.
But what I particularly loved about the roast from way back when is the good fun in which it was taken. You can see Frank Sinatra and many famous personalities also joining in on the fun, laughing until all you could see were their teeth. If that’s not good fun, then I don’t know what is.
